Strong methodology with a scientific foundation

Lego® Serious Play® was developed by the Lego® group end of the nineties to overcome the shortcomings of existing strategy development processes. In partnership with the IMD in Lausanne a solid scientific base was formed & proved on the concepts of flow, imagination, hand-brain connection, constructivism, constructionism & play. A few words about the concepts:

•  Flow means that things are more learning rich, if they are adequately hard. If there is no emotional connection to what is worked on, there is no long-term learning impact.

•  The concept of imagination describes the unique human ability to form mental images of things that don’t exist yet. This ability is particularly crucial in constantly changing environments.

•  Neuroscientific research has shown that 75% of our brain cells are connected with our hands. Using our hands as part of a problem solving process allows us to ‘think through our fingers’ which unleashes creative energies, new modes of thought & ways of seeing.

•  Building physical structures enable us to build in our mind. Learning from this building process happens especially well, when we build something external to us.

•  Play is often associated with the opposite of work, however through play we create social bonds, can express emotions, undergo cognitive development & take part in constructive competition.

Simple & straight-forward toolkit

A set of seven different application techniques out of the Lego® Serious Play® toolbox allow me to design tailor-made workshops which ensure that your challenge can be worked on effectively. The seven techniques include:

The Lego® Serious Play® facilitated process always follows four simple steps that are repeated throughout the course of the workshop. The facilitator initiates the process by posing a question to which participants construct a model. Once the construction is complete, the models are shared within the group & the phase of the workshop is concluded with a round of reflection. Outcomes of the workshop phases are documented in various ways for further use later on.
